The Hookah pipe – a social smoking accessory

A hookah pipe is a special type of pipe that is used for smoking legal herbs. Hookahs are traditionally made from blown glass that is usually delicately decorated using gold paint or enamel, silver, porcelain, pieces of leather or carved stones. Hookah pipes may be Syrian or Egyptian in style, or custom-designed. Hookahs originated in the Middle East and are sometimes called shishas, which is the Persian word for bottle or glass.

The hookah consists of a container filled with water, which acts as a filter for the smoking material or the legal herb. There is a tube that extends from the top of the container and is used to hold the bowl of hot coals on which your favourite herbs are placed. The tube runs through the water. There is a mouthpiece, which is attached to a tube located at the side of the container. After the smoke is inhaled through the mouthpiece, the smoke is pulled by air pressure from the coals through the water. The smoke is then filtered from the particles.

Several accessories for your hookah are also sold both online and in specialist shops. Metal tongs and special charcoal are examples of these accessories. The special charcoal can burn for 30 minutes or even longer. The hookah proves to be more useful as a device that promotes camaraderie when social groups gather to smoke legal herbs. When this is the case, you pass the hookah around or you set it down between yourselves so that you can take turns in smoking.
