Five of the Most Overrated Legal Highs

The first most overrated legal high is alcohol. Alcohol is made from fermented grains, vegetables, or fruit. Though it is a natural product, it affects the central nervous system, which controls almost all body functions, and can lead to a dangerous loss of control, particularly when driving. Although the legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21, the National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse says that about 80% of high school students drink.

The next one is caffeine, a drug naturally produced in the seeds and leaves of certain plants. It may also be produced artificially and added to certain foods. It stimulates the central nervous system, resulting in increased alertness, but can be dangerous if consumed in large amounts. Caffeine provides a temporary energy and mood boost from coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks, and pain relievers.

Another is the kava, one of the well-known ethno-botanical “legal highs.” Herbal pharmacies provide low doses of kava to relieve anxiety and stress, or as a mild tranquiliser. However, kava is known to cause liver damage, including cirrhosis, hepatitis, and liver failure. Pregnant women should not take kava, because it can weaken the muscles of the uterus.

The next one is the sinicuichi (Heimia salicifolia). It has a reputation for bringing on aural hallucinations, but also for causing aching joints and soreness.

Last, but definitely not the least, is the popular energy drink. When drinking this type of legal high, you are getting a large and unhealthy dose of caffeine and sugar.
