Does cannabis make you more creative?

Ganja Sunset

Cannabis has been used for donkeys’ years by artists to develop their creative ideas and to aid philosophiocal thought and discussion. But there are people out there who believe that cannabis actually inhibits the creative process. They claim that getting stoned will only lead to scrambled plans and off-the-wall ideas that seem miraculous at the time but which you can’t even remember the next day.

George Michael

George Michael
openly uses cannabis and says the world would be “an easier place to live with” if cannabis was legal. He also says it helps the writing process. I wonder if he was on it when he wrote the ground-breaking lyrics for “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. Perhaps not the greatest advocate for the cause.

Just Jack

Just Jack has publicly criticised George Michael for these claims, saying that cannabis “has the complete opposite effect on me. It really is a way of escaping having to work”.

Other famous artists with a fondness for weed include Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles (of course), Neil Young, Sir Mick Jagger, Pablo Picasso, Oliver Stone and Steven King. Top actors Woody Harrelson and Brad Pitt are also habitual cannabis users. Well, I don’t see their performances suffering. And where would we be without the visions of Bob Marley and Oliver Stone? The world would surely be a greyer place. But how much part did cannabis actually play in their inspirations?

Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone has this to say on the matter: “If it hadn’t been for marijuana and my black brothers in Vietnam, I don’t think I’d be the same person, I don’t think I’d be alive… When I got high on that stuff, … that’s when I began to understand that life is sacred, that life has great vibrancy, which, in my case, was a perception I couldn’t get out of.”

Bob Marley

Bob Marley named one of his albums after the sacred plant – “Kaya” is a Jamaican term for marijuana.

The idea that smoking cannabis can increase your imagination and creativity hasn’t been explained scientifically. No-one knows exactly how the THC affects your brian in that respect. However, there is plenty of other evidence to support this view.

Users have often reported that smoking cannabis gives them a new perspective on familiar situations or problems. Deeper understanding of broad concepts is also said to occur when stoned. Ideas can be more playful and free-flowing and writers claim this can be invaluable for curing “writer’s block”.

What pot smoking doesn’t do is encourage linear thinking, but this can be very useful. While certain tasks like keeping your accounts might prove more difficult after a joint or two, if you have to brainstorm an idea or come up with some lyrics you may find your mind isn’t restricted by narrow and indoctrinated thought.

THC also affects your physical senses. Music becomes much more alive and you can get completely lost in it, hearing depths that you may not have noticed before. Colours are brighter and you can see more detail in images or even hallucinate. Your taste buds also get a total treat – everything tastes amazing and far more intense than usual. And your sense of touch is greatly heightened (one reason why so many people enjoy sex on cannabis). So with all these increased sensory experiences it’s no wonder cannabis users say they feel inspired to create when they toke. Suddenly there’s so much more to describe.

So here’s a totally positive reason for using pot. We need creative people in our society and they should be allowed to use whatever means they chose to open their minds.
